Different approaches to a controlled vocabulary

  1. Equivalence Relationships: The simplest type of controlled voc.:
synonyms; list of preferred term with its variants
  2. Hierarchical relationships: a taxonomy; Preferred term – variants
    – parent (broader term) – children (narrower term)
  3. Associative relationships: The ‘Taj Mahal of controlled
vacabularies is a Thesaurus; Preferred term – variants – related
    terms (Parent – Siblings – Children-Cousins) – associated terms
